Blog #12 Hamlet Character Paragraph
The character that I chose to focus on was Ophelia. After I read the character descriptions, I concluded that she would be a very interesting character to write about. Even though she is considered “static,” she is still an important character. She transforms from a very romantic, “affectionate” woman into an insane woman, which symbolizes the “dual nature of women.” Her mental decay would provide a very interesting perspective to my blog. As her transition becomes more apparent, her “emotional pain” would emerge, especially in her attitude, such as on social media. From the viewpoint of social media, therefore, Ophelia would initially be very lighthearted, posting romantic and happy thoughts to her social media accounts. However, as she struggles in love, she would become darker and much more emotionally hurt, which would be apparent in her posts. She is a very relatable character: everybody has relationship problems at some point in their life. Even though most people would not respond by slipping into a state of insanity like she did, many people still understand what it is to feel hurt by someone that they love. Personally, I sympathize with Ophelia because of her “intense suffering” when she couldn’t let go of her relationship with Hamlet. I think because Ophelia is decaying into insanity while at the same time still struggling to hold on to her love, her perspective on life would bring a unique viewpoint to my blog.
